Horse enthusiasts already know that on Friday, August 7, the place to be is the InterContinental Hotel, just around the corner from the prestigious Dublin Horse Show, where embryos from some of the world’s finest damlines regularly command remarkable prices. Organizers Luk Van Puymbroeck and Gerald Lenaerts know they have to deliver something extraordinary every year.

“It may sound like a cliché to say the bar keeps getting higher, but it’s true. The collection we’ve assembled for this Friday is one we couldn’t repeat twice a year. You simply don’t find these embryos together. Breeders don’t offer them lightly, but in Ireland they are truly appreciated. Irish buyers know the damlines and they’re willing to take a calculated gamble, even though the foals won’t be born until 2027,” explain Luk Van Puymbroeck and Gerald Lenaerts.

An added attraction is that buyers are officially recognized as the breeders of the embryos they purchase and can register the resulting foals with the studbook of their choice. This means the horses can later compete in Irish young horse championships, whose finals are held during the Dublin Horse Show and are highly regarded throughout Ireland.

Two embryos sold or €88,000

Last year, 21 embryos were sold in the auction room, with 16 going to Irish buyers, while another three sold online. Olympic champion Rodrigo Pessoa won several bidding duels on behalf of Artemis Farms in Wellington, purchasing the United Touch S embryo out of McLain Ward’s Azur HH and the full brother or sister to Olympic champion Checker 47, both for €88,000. Artemis Farms also secured an Ermitage Kalone embryo out of the 1.65m Grand Prix mare Like A Diamond Van Het Schaeck for €84,000.

“Last year’s auction was exceptional, so we knew we had to come back with another outstanding collection. This year we offer 26 embryos by 17 different stallions. United Touch S has five embryos, while Comme il Faut is represented by three,” the organizers add.

This year’s highlights

Asked about the highlights, the answer comes quickly: “There are so many.”

Among this year’s standout offerings are:

A full brother or sister to the outstanding 1.60m Grand Prix horse Picobello van ‘t Roosakker, ridden by Jason Smith.

A United Touch S embryo out of the Olympic mare Ornellaia.

A Comme il Faut embryo out of the half-sister to United Touch S.

A Pacino embryo out of the 1.60m Grand Prix mare Sterrehof’s Ushi.

An Impress-K van ‘t Kattenheye embryo out of the 1.70m Grand Prix mare Gancia de Muze.

Other exceptional lots include a Chacco Blue x Verdi embryo from the dam of Garant (1.60m GP with Beezie Madden), whose dam is also a half-sister to Incredible (1.60m GP with Daniel Coyle).
