Keenan added another success to her winning streak at the Washington International Horse Show (WIHS), where she began her career 23 years ago with little ponies. The Grand Prix was the highlight of the week at the WIHS, which takes place at the Show Place Arena in Upper Marlboro, Maryland. Earlier, JJ Torano (USA) rode I Am Inge, owned by Ilan Ferder, to victory in the 50,000 US dollar Ambassador’s Cup Grand Prix CSI2*. Emi Richard and Diaceur prevailed in three rounds and won the WIHS equestrian final. The WIHS ends on Sunday, October 25th.

Riders from eight countries took to the starting line on the course designed by course designer Colm Quinn (IRL), and 13 of them stayed faultless and advanced to the final. The first to start there was US Olympic champion McLain Ward with Jordan Molga M. Their time of 38.44 seconds for the flawless ride held for three laps until Daniel Coyle (IRL) entered the course with Farrel. With breathtaking turns, Coyle pushed the winning time to 37.13 seconds with his long-time partner. He thus finished second for the second time in a row, while Ward fell back to fourth place.

„My ride didn’t go at all according to plan,“ Coyle admitted. „Already from the third to the fourth jump I tried to ride in seven galloping jumps and didn’t manage it – just like Lillie, but also on the last obstacle. Farrel was very, very agile and very, very fast. Although I was still quite fast, I knew that I had left a small gap open.“

Lillie Keenan was thrilled to be able to have her name on the President’s Cup trophy. She is the third rider to win both the WIHS Equestrian Final and the Grand Prix at the WIHS – after her trainer McLain Ward and world No. 2 Kent Farrington. „I’ve been coming to Washington with horses since I was seven or eight years old,“ she said. „I was a winner in the pony classes here, a winner in the Junior Hunters, and won the Equitation Final here at 13. At 16 or 17, I rode in the Open Jumpers class. Now I’m 30, so I’ve been here for a very long time,“ she laughed. „It’s really incredible to be able to jump in front of my home crowd at the President’s Cup – a competition I’ve been watching since my first visit here on a little pony. My mother always wanted me to see the best riders in the world, so it’s pretty great to be a part of them now.“

With a fast ride following Lillie Keenan, Shane Sweetnam placed third on Pia Maria H with a time of 38.09 seconds. „Even though she is eleven years old, she is still inexperienced for her age and has not yet accumulated as much experience as this summer,“ said Sweetnam about the BWP mare by Kasanova de la Pomme x Tangelo van de Zuuthoeve. „Throughout her development, she has improved year after year and has jumped in Aachen and Dublin, among other places. This is probably the first time in her life that she has jumped in a ring, and the third place in the World Cup is quite good. I think we are really making good progress with her, and I am looking forward to the future.“

Rene Dittmer also made it into the final with Cody (v. Casall), but an unfortunate mistake cost him tenth place.

Mit einem mitreißenden Stechen ritt Lillie Keenan (USA) auf Kick On, im Besitz von Chansonette Farm LLC zum Sieg beim mit 340.000 US-Dollar dotierten Longines FEI Jumping World Cup Washington CSI5*-W.
