ADVERTISEMENT: There is a certain kind of family photo where three generations stand in a row, identically dressed, identically proud, and one of them has their eyes closed. No one notices that at the time. The photo is still kept. It is on the mantelpiece, and over time it becomes more of a story about the family than about the eyes.
In San Miguel de Allende, something similar happened on Saturday. Jaime Azcárraga, Gonzalo and Andrés rode the same five-star Grand Prix – for all three it was a premiere – and only the quiz in the show „The Horse Show“ drew attention to it. Frederik De Backer read out the clues. Joe Clee and Kendra Claricia Brinkop, who formed a team for this occasion, were wrong. „I didn’t even notice it when I looked at it,“ said Joe, and that was completely understandable.
So: an orthodox approach, three supporters, two victims. Not a single Azcárraga managed to make it to the final, with three riders taking part and Conor Swail emerging as the winner, who had nothing to do with any kind of orthodoxy. Gonzalo finished tenth on a throw-off and was thus the best of the family.
Joe's own opinion about the oldest of the three had nothing to do with mistakes. He liked Jaime's style, especially the short stirrups. That is a valid remark about a 67-year-old who, alongside his sons, still rides a 1.60-meter Grand Prix horse.
On Saturday, the fifth obstacle was 1.60 m high, and two of the three had a throw there. Nevertheless, the photo is worth keeping.
